SIM2 MICO 50 LED DLP Front Projector Reviewed

By Andrew Robinson

SIM2 has been making some of the finest projectors for the home cinema markets the world over for years now. To add more credence to their already storied reputation, filmmaking legend Francis Ford Coppola has recently given SIM2 and their products his personal stamp of approval, using SIM2's Grand Cinema C3X Lumis Series projectors in his home and studio. While it's no secret SIM2 can design and manufacture a traditional front projector, the question that remains to be answered is - can they carry on the tradition for excellence when it comes to building an LED based projector? That's what I wanted to find out.

The SIM2 MICO 50 LED based DLP projector arrived right on the heels, literally, of another first generation LED DLP projector. I was actually quite pleased with the other LED projector's performance, so right away the MICO 50 had some stiff competition. The MICO 50 retails for around $22,000 depending on how you have it configured; SIM2 offers the MICO 50 with a variety of lens options such as long throw and short throw zooms as well as fixed and anamorphic lenses. The MICO 50 comes standard with... Read the full review

Will Private Label AV Brands Kill Off Specialty AV?

By Jerry Del Colliano

Easy money. I dream of easy money but it's so hard to find. Specialty AV manufacturers dream of easy money too, which means a $10,000,000 purchase offer from the likes of Best Buy, Costco or Wal-mart - but those easy dollars come with serious side effects. The big boys can pump cash into starved companies in ways that no Mom-and-Pop dealer (or 100 of them) can do. They also can just as easily totally wreck a distribution network.

New brands like Vizio made their mark selling large HDTVs for a fraction of the price of the more established brands via distribution channels like Costco and Wal-mart that sold value, value and more value until the consumer couldn't take it anymore. Now the likes of Sony, Samsung, Toshiba and Panasonic have to offer their lofty brands and often better technologies at competitive prices, leaving the retailer with uber-thin profit margins. These are the kind of margins that specialty AV dealers can sell enough volume of to keep the doors open with, and in many cases are killing specialty AV retailers.... Read the full review

Sharp LC-46LE820UN LED LCD HDTV Reviewed

By Adrienne Maxwell While other TV manufacturers were demonstrating 3D technology at CES, Sharp showed off its new quad-pixel technology, called Quattron. This technology uses a four-color filter that adds yellow to the standard red, green and blue, which (according to Sharp) allows for the display of over a trillion colors and overcomes the difficulties that previous LCD panels had in reproducing yellow and gold, in particular. Quad-pixel technology makes its debut in three high-end Sharp lines: the LE920, LE820 and LE810. The LE820 Series includes screen sizes of 40, 46, 52 and 60 inches. We have not performed a hands-on review of the LC-46LE820UN, but here is an overview of the TV's features.

This 46-inch, 1080p LCD uses edge LED lighting, in which the LEDs are located around the edges of the panel instead of behind it. Two of the main benefits of the edge-lit design are improved energy efficiency and the ability to offer a slimmer cabinet design; the LC-46LE820UN is EnergyStar 4.0-certified and measures just 1.58 inches deep. This TV uses Sharp's 1080p X-Gen LCD panel, has a 4ms response time and features... Read More
