Senate Approves Strict Regulation of Tobacco
The U.S. Senate last week gave final approval to legislation that will enable the Food and Drug Administration to regulate the manufacture and marketing of cigarettes and other tobacco products for the first time. The White House said President Obama, a smoker himself, will sign the bill as soon as it reaches his desk.

Obama Fails to Stop Mountaintop Removal
The Obama administration today announced plans to oversee and regulate more tightly, rather than eliminate, the environmentally destructive practice of mountaintop removal coal mining in the six Appalachian states where it is currently used. In mountaintop removal mining, coal companies blast the tops off mountains, fill the valleys below, and bury healthy streams under the rubble.

 
House Passes Cash for Clunkers Bill
Last week, the House approved a Cash for Clunkers bill that aims to boost new auto sales by encouraging consumers to trade in their gas-guzzling cars and trucks for vouchers worth up to $4,500, which they can use to buy or lease new vehicles that are more fuel-efficient than their old clunkers. But is the legislation strong enough to achieve those goals?
