About Auto Repair: Magic Valve Stem Caps and Philanthropic Mechanics

About.com   Auto Repair
In the Spotlight | More Topics |
  from Matthew Wright
This week we've tested one of the latest "innovations" in the automotive realm -- magical valve stem caps that tell you whether your tires are properly inflated or you're riding on marshmallows. They claim to monitor your tire pressure with low-tech, no electrics, old fashioned technology. But do they work? We've tested these tire caps to see whether they live up to the self-generated hype.

About Environmental Issues: McCain Scores ZERO on the Environment in 2007

About.com   Environmental Issues
In the Spotlight | More Topics |
  from Larry West
The presidential campaign is heating up as the number of contenders winds down, and more and more voters are starting to ask not only what the presidential candidates think about the environment but also what they are doing about it. The League of Conservation Voters congressional scorecard is one measure of environmental action by elected officials, and the annual yardstick shows some pretty surprising results this year. In other news, Whole Foods has announced plans to stop using plastic bags, and a reader asks why recycling isn't mandatory everywhere in the United States. Click on the title links in this newsletter to learn more about these and other important environmental issues. Have a good week.

McCain Scores ZERO on Environment in 2007
U.S. Sen. John McCain may be the frontrunner for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, but he placed dead last among Members of Congress when it came to his voting record on environmental issues in 2007. McCain was zero for 15 on the League of Conservation Voters' annual congressional scorecard. The problem isn't that McCain voted the wrong way on crucial environmental issues last year, it's that he didn't bother to vote at all.

Whole Foods Pledges to Stop Using Plastic Bags
Whole Foods, one of the leading grocery chains in North America that specializes in natural and organic food, has decided to ban the use of plastic bags in every one of its 270 stores--a move that will take 150 million plastic bags out of circulation annually.

Why Is Recycling Not Mandatory in All U.S. Cities?
If recycling is one of the three Rs of environmental preservation--reduce, reuse, and recycle--then why is recycling not mandatory everywhere in the United States? And why have some cities scrapped their recycling programs in favor of landfills, and reverted to tossing out recyclables with the rest of the trash?

About Cars: Old Audis, new Audis

This week we're taking a look at Audi's upcoming small wagon, as well as their soon-to-be-replaced A4 and S4 convertibles -- plus I've written an article about one of the key technologies that helps make Audis such great cars.

I love wagons. I just love 'em. They have almost as much carrying capacity as an SUV and they drive like cars. And since wagons are more popular in Europe, the few that we do get in the US tend to drive pretty darn well. So I'm really looking forward to the new A4 Avant, scheduled to make its official debut next week at the Geneva auto show. Check out these photos of the new A4 Avant.
