About Entrepreneurs: Finding and Working with a Mentor

About.com   Entrepreneurs
In the Spotlight | More Topics |
  from Scott Allen
Every entrepreneur should have a mentor -- someone who's been down that road before and can share their wisdom on an ongoing basis. This week we take a look at the value of mentoring, finding a mentor, and how to get the most out of your mentoring experience.

Business Mentors: Why Every Entrepreneur Should Have One
As entrepreneurs, we easily fall into the trap of thinking we have to go it alone. We're on a tight budget, and working like crazy. We may not have the support of our friends and family. It's the road less travelled. That's why you need someone to walk with you who's been down that road before. A good mentor acts as a guide for your entrepreneurial path. They're not a coach, who focuses on performance, and they're not a consultant, who focuses on a specific problem. They're someone who can guide you along that often bumpy road of entrepreneurship and avoid some of the pitfalls along the way.

Having a mentor is extremely valuable, especially to entrepreneurs, but it's a big commitment on the part of both you and your mentor. In this second article in our series on mentoring, we'll take a look at the challenges of choosing a business mentor, and steps you can take to ensure finding a good match.

Working with a Business Mentor
See what two top experts on mentoring have to say about how to make the most of your mentoring relationship. My favorite tip has to be: "Don't say, 'I'd like to pick your brain.'" Create a mutually respectful and rewarding mentoring relationship, and it will be an experience that will last a lifetime.
